The exact date of the foundation of the Sanahin Monastery has not been established, but the oldest surviving structure, the Church of the Holy Mother of God, was erected between 928 and 944. According to historical chronicles, the first builders of the monastery were fugitive monks who were hiding in the mountains from the persecution of the Byzantine emperor.&nbsp;
Sanahin Monastery was a major educational center of the Middle Ages.
In the 12th century, a medical school operated at the monastery, where human anatomy and physiology were studied. Historical chronicles mention that the ambassadors of Armenia were accompanied by advisers from among the scholars of Sanahin. And in the quiet of the monastic cells, beautiful creations of miniaturists and poets were created.
The largest medieval book depository of Sanahin was built in 1063 at the behest of Princess Hranush.
Within the walls were stone bookshelves for storing manuscripts. Next to the main complex is the tomb of the Zakaryan dynasty.
What to see?
The Sanahin Bridge connects the banks of the Debed River within the city of Alaverdi. This bridge, outstanding in its engineering and artistic features, was built in 1192 by Princess Vaneni.
You can meet the Mikoyan Brothers Museum on the way to Sanahin. There is also a MiG-21 fighter jet as a symbol of success and pride in the participation of one of the brothers, Artem Mikoyan.
