Despite its status of a town, there is no city hustle and bustle in Goris and in the morning you will be woken up by a rooster and birdsong. Enjoy your morning cup of coffee or tea in the open air with Goris pastry and sweets, breathe in the purest exhilarating air and renounce the crazy world of progress. Admire the mountain ranges surrounding the town and only after that have a stroll around.
The town is located in a mountain pit while the eponymous river Goris divides the town into old and new Goris. Old town or Kyores is a labyrinth of caves with stone pyramids and quaint fancy pillars with brown, gray, black and brown cones that are called Goris Stone Forest. Winds, water and the sun have worked wonders.&nbsp;
Since ancient times people lived in these caves. Archaeological excavations revealed pottery of the copper and bronze ages. With the lapse of time these caves expanded, became more comfortable and already in early XX century Kyores became a fairly large cave settlement. In Old Town you can as well see ruins of a church and a cemetery of the 17th-19th centuries.
What to see /what to do ?
Let’s move from the old to the new town and have a walk along the streets of Goris. The houses are mostly two-storeyed with unique architecture, garnished with vine. The House-Museum of the famous Armenian prose-writer Aksel Bakunts, St Gregory Church and the monument “Seven Springs’’ are really worth seeing.&nbsp;
People in the town are hospitable, measured both in conversation and in their behaviour, proud as eagles soaring the skies of Syunik.&nbsp;
It’s advisable to organize a tour from Goris to the cave village of Khndzoresk, aged more than a thousand years. It’s possible to get to the cave settlement by a suspension swinging bridge that is 160m long and 63m high.
Don’t miss Tatev Monastery of the 9th-14th centuries which hosted a university within its walls in the Middle Ages. You can get to the Monastery by the world’s longest reversible aerial tramway “Wings of Tatev”, 5752m long.
In the evening when you are back to Goris again, try the local cuisine. Wind up the evening with a glass of home-made wine or a shot of home-made fruit or mulberry vodka. No doubt, you are more likely to get drunk on the fresh air rather than on these drinks!
It is in Goris that you can fully relax, and plunge into the depths of history simultaneously.
